That is the question. Who prefers what? And why? Discuss.

I prefer unabridged. Simply for the fact that the characters and story are more fully developed. Some people think it's a bit boring but to me, I relish the in depth character, and surroundings.

Me too. Plus, I like to get the fullest understanding of what the author was trying to go for, not just what someone else thinks is the message or thinks are the important parts. There are so many subtleties that I miss, especially the first time around, so why would I want someone to take those out?

Often times if I listen to an abridged tape, I still feel like I have to read the book when I'm done.

True... I like reading the book along with an unabridged tape too. You know, when I'm feeling lazy and just want to be read to?

Always unabridged! I feel cheated by abridged....just because its cheaper doesn't make it better.

Unabridged, no question about it. I don't even know why they bother making abridged versions. I imagine some authors don't get translated into book-on-tape based on a refusal to abridge their work. I know most of my favborite authors cannot be found on tape.

Actually, I believe it is a marketing decision based on the belief that unabridged tapes or discs to not sell as well as abridged. Which leads to the second assumption... that books on tape do not sell well enough to produce for more than the best selling authors. And some genres get ignored entirely.

I most often listen to the unabridged tape, but if I want to actually read the book as well or I'm listening to it on a trip that will finish before the story, then I go for abridged.
